Watch MTN Access to Art Episode Six – February 2007

Segment One: The Bean Scene is a coffee shop in a former Burger King that was a notorious gang hangout. The new owners transformed the space into a community gathering place making it a hub of artistic activity, from the art on the walls to live music and spoken word performances. Correspondent Carrie Volk checks it out. Also, Tom Cassidy talks to the co-organizers of the Art Shanty Projects.

Segment Two: Bedlam Theatre is a radical experimental community theater that has been a part of Minneapolis' West Bank neighborhood for 10 years. They recently moved into a new space just down the street from the old one. Correspondent Beth Peloff takes you to their last event in their old space and gives you a peek at the new one. Also, host Tom Cassidy talks to folks in the Knitting Shanty.

Segment Three: The Mac Phail Center for Music for is a 94 year old nonprofit organization located in downtown Minneapolis and dedicated to music education. Correspondent Carrie Volk followed a group of students from Whitter International Elementary School as they attended classes at Mac Phail as a part of the Community Partnership Program. Also, host Tom Cassidy visits the Shanty of Misfit Toys.

Segment Four: Gallery 13 is a community-oriented storefront art gallery nestled in the Sheridan neighborhood of Northeast Minneapolis. Correspondent John Akre visited the opening night of a recent exhibit by Alexandra Rozenman, a Russian immigrant artist and teacher whose dream-like paintings and drawings tell stories.
